Droughts, floods, soil degradation, loss of pollinators… The consequences of climate change are no longer just hypothetical. They have a direct impact on our daily lives.

On November 6, the Climate Risk Assessment Center (CERAC) published its Belgian Climate Risk Assessment (BCRA) report. It is the first national evaluation of risks linked to climate change and ecosystem degradation. The document identifies 28 major risks divided into five categories: ecosystems, food, infrastructure and buildings, health and well-being, economy and finance.

This unprecedented report offers an integrated analysis of climate and environmental risks for Belgium. The warning is clear: climate change and ecosystem degradation are not distant threats, but a reality already affecting our society, our economy, and our infrastructure.

Methodology

The BCRA report was drawn up on the basis of a rigorous analysis of existing scientific literature and consultation with over 250 experts. It is aligned with the methodology used for the European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA), conducted by the European Environment Agency (EEA). Each risk was assessed on the basis of its projected severity, according to multiple global warming scenarios (+2°C, +3°C and +4°C), the confidence in the assessment of the severity of the risk and the degree of policy readiness.
