AXA honors the memory of its founder Claude Bébéar.

Aside from the nomination, we would like to share with you the passing of Claude Bébéar, founder of the AXA Group at the age of 90. Over a single generation, he transformed a small Normandy-based mutual insurer into a global powerhouse operating in more than 50 countries, including Belgium where AXA is now a leading player. Born in 1935 and a graduate of École Polytechnique, Bébéar joined the Anciennes Mutuelles in 1958 and quickly pushed for international expansion, innovation, and social engagement. In 1985, he created the AXA name, and the 1996 merger with UAP cemented the group’s status among the world’s insurance giants. His legacy also includes pioneering corporate philanthropy through initiatives like AXA Atout Cœur and the Institut du Mécénat Humanitaire. After stepping down in 2000, he left behind a group of 140,000 employees and 50 million clients. Business leaders praise him as a visionary whose culture of solidarity and responsibility continues to shape AXA, particularly in Belgium, where his influence remains deeply felt.
